Can You Crack It? The Forgotten Dutch Invention That Shaped the Contemporary World
There are numerous candidates to claim the designation as “world’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The printing press. The steam engine.
According to a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to the mechanised sawmill invented by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before mechanised sawing, constructing a modest trading ship necessitated approximately 10 sawyers working for 90 days,” notes the author. “With wind-driven sawmills, an identical quantity of cut lumber could be produced in less than seven days.”
Thanks to this speedy automated saw, that turned logs to planks using virtually no human effort, the Dutch could construct ships faster compared to anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Dutch naval, financial as well as cultural supremacy in Europe and the world.
The Original True Industrial Device
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, contends Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial true industrial apparatus.” A wind turbine turned a gear. A single part transformed the rotary motion into up-and-down action to power the cutting blade. Another component changed that same rotary motion into a lateral motion advancing the timber to the blade. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead one precise increment each cycle.
“Each element seemed simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s brilliance was to integrate these parts in order that they operated within a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing with each downward stroke and advancing with each return stroke. It was an astonishingly clever use of basic parts.”
