Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
