Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review systems will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the right to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Practical Application
A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
